Lucja Barker
Many years ago, in a small village in Northern Poland, I became fascinated with clay, deposits of which were naturally occurring there. As a child, I used it to sculpt figures and full scenes.
In 1969 I graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Gdynia, Poland. In following years I held art positions.
Upon emigrating to Canada in 1986 I led a busy life working and taking care of my family. At night, however, I would find retreat in painting and other artistic endeavours.
Moving to the Sunshine Coast in 2011 opened new possibilities. Inspired by amazing surroundings, and overwhelmed with motivation, I decided to go back to my roots and take up sculpting once again.
I set up a small studio with a kiln in my home in Gibsons, B.C., and today I find myself creating bold and free-flowing sculptures ranging from 10-50 cm in height.
Recently I started to sculpt in wax and have cast a few forms in bronze using the lost wax method. I am entranced by the earthy nature of clay, and I am also experimenting with glazes and trying other media. I am currently exhibiting my work in my studio as well as in local galleries.
